A New Level of Hope: Study Notes on James 4:7-8

Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:7-8

Submission and sinners. Two words the world will teach you to hate. Deny. Followers of God must submit to Him and own the sinner part. Followers of God get to draw near to Him. The Creator of this universe will draw near to us when we do, and that is just amazing to me.

Choose God over pride. A truth and indicator of where the war begins between good and evil. The original sin was conceived by a woman who wanted more than what God had given her. She had all of Eden, but it just would not satisfy. The beauty and affliction of Eve is so familiar. I am her. If only Eve had resisted. But betrayal entered the world, yet at the same time so did a new level of hope.

We became unhooked from God through pride of the first sin, but through humility we can tether to Him again. Drawing near to God requires us to remove what separates us from Him. When I experience the closeness of God, of Jesus, of the Holy Spirit, all my desires are quenched at once. This is where good wins. The victory has already been won for eternity, I must do my best in the war story I find myself living in. There will be battles, but I must fight the good fight. And drawing near to God is where the best begins.

Lord Jesus, Thank you for this new level of hope you gave the world. Reveal to me anything that gets in the way of being near to You. With Your light everything is brighter. Help me to see where You are leading and know what You are teaching me today. Give me strength to offer the best of me today. Let today be filled with You. Amen.
